Postcards

A simple card featuring the photo of a famous landmark or tourist destination was once valued as a souvenir, or used to convey a short note to family and friends. Now we send a digital image and text message using our cell phone. Although much more efficient, the digital alternative may seem more prosaic too.

But can’t a digital postcard serve as a memento just as favorably as its paper ancestors, even if it doesn’t display the stamp and postmark of a faraway place? We think so. This is our collection of postcards, bearing descriptions of places we visited, remember with fondness, and share with friends.

MOUNT VERNON - 2011

- George Washington’s Mount Vernon is a very intersting and photogenic place. For this visit, we decided it would be fun to rent bikes and peddle there from Olde Town Alexandria along Mount Vernon Trail.

SAN JUAN ISLANDS - 2010 A

- Melanie’s aunt and uncle, Robin and Ken, invited us to join them on a cruise to the San Juan Islands during the week around Independence Day. Wow! For the next several days, we berthed in a cozy cabin on a large yacht called the Sea Ya, with it’s gleaming teak woodwork and polished brass fixtures.

SAN JUAN ISLANDS - 2010 B

- After leaving Anacortes, our seabourne excursion carried us to Friday Harbor and a most interesting private estate called Rosario.

SAN JUAN ISLANDS - 2010 C

- We finished our exploration of Rosario on Orcas Island, and made our way to a quiet seaside village called Roche Harbor, on the far side of San Juan Island.

SINT MAARTEN - 2007 A

- Our last vacation was in January 2006, in Amsterdam, where it was rather cold. This time Melanie and Chris insisted on a warmer destination!

SAINT MARTIN - 2007 B

- The southern half of this tropical island, called Sint Maarten, is part of the Netherlands Antilles. The northern half is part of the French West Indies and is called Saint Martin. It is the smallest island to be divided between two nations.

NEW YORK - 2006 A

- Capital of commerce, finance and culture. Home to the United Nations, the Yankees, and more than 8 million people. New York City is a City of the World. A couple of days is hardly enough time to get to know a place, but NYC is worth the trip.

NEW YORK - 2006 B

- Continuation of the New York City trip, from Ellis Island to the Met.

COLORADO - 2006

- Members of the Western Loudoun LaCrosse team represented Virginia in the Colorado LAX Shootout.

PARIS - 2006

- Paris was the third city of the 2006 EuroTrip. I had less than 24 hours in the City of Lights, but was determined to see as much as I could.

LONDON - 2006

- It did not seem right to spend all my time in one city on my first trip to Europe. A trip to London would be a great little excursion. I could spend one day looking around and getting acquainted with the town for a longer visit later.

AMSTERDAM - NEW YEAR‘S E

- Amsterdam has been variously described as avant-garde, eccentric, tolerant, historic, energetic, relaxed, beautiful, and more. This small city provides a great deal for visitors to appreciate. We found it to be wonderfully exciting from the first day.

AMSTERDAM - 2006

- Nearly everything in Amsterdam is a museum. Well, maybe not everything. However, the city does have over 7000 historic buildings – more than any other city. We discovered much about the city, new and old, just by walking around.

COSTA RICA 2005

- Pictures from Chris & Melanie's trip to the rain forest.

ENGLAND & WALES - 2000

- During a morning meeting someone suggested I should apply for a passport, in case I had to travel to the UK office. When I returned from lunch I was told that I was to leave the next day! That's when I found that you could get a passport in 24 hours.
